I met the wonderfully idiosyncratic heroine, Annie Raymond, in Penny s first detective novel, Like False Money, and enjoyed her doubts, courage and intelligence there In The Doll Makers, Annie travels from her new post in London to visit her father in Scotland and Penny Grubb highlights the contrasts between the noise and claustrophobia of the capital and the space and relative peace of a small Scottish loch side town The story holds the reader s interest from the start and keeps a tight grip on [...]

They say you shouldn t judge a book by it s cover, but in this case you really should I was compelled to buy The Doll Makers at CrimeFest quite simply because the deliciously dark cover illustration stood out among the piles of other books And when I settled down to read it, I found the story as noteworthy as the artwork.Told through the eyes of fraud investigator Annie Raymond, it is a tale with many threads that, at first, seem a little overwhelming in their apparent disparity Just a few chapt [...]

The book engaged my interest from the beginning, developing into a fast moving thriller that I found a real page turner.

The Cover of the Book and the Name of the Story were intriguing Once I purchased the book and read the preface my first thought was oh no, I hope this is not going to be an indicator of the rest of the book , but still desired to sit down to read You can t always tell, at first I soon realized that the wording was a bit confusing because she wrote with an European English that is a tad different from the Americanized I m accustomed too I m so glad I continued It took me a little than a day to r [...]

I liked parts of this book very much I could see every scene clearly in my mind, so I got a free trip to Scotland, and England too For me that s worth the time it took to read right there. The detective had a good back story, but her frequent idiotic choices were annoying to me Gee, I don t know this scruffy dude who is a murder suspect, but, sure, I ll ride with him and go to visit his druggy friend s tumbledown house What could go wrong Etc The plot, in some ways, ended up not making much sense [...]

Edgy and exciting crime thrillerThis novel is pretty much everything you could want from a crime thriller Lots of intrigue, action and layers of mystery to keep the reader satisfied.PI Annie Raymond is thrown into a world of corruption as she tries to save her failing business by going to Argyle to ask help from her rich Aunt Once there, and seeing her father again, Annie decides to help him with a difficult case Past memories begin to haunt her and she unearths lies and secrets kept hidden for [...]

This winner of the CWA Debut Dagger award is certainly a very deserved winner It did start leaving me wondering if there d been an earlier book with Annie as the heroine, clearly I haven t read that yet Considering she was supposed to be an experienced PI she made some silly mistake, however, that apart the tale turns from being a straightforward murder and an apparently disconnected robbery into a very real and very dangerous search for the truth, not only in the investigation of the crimes but [...]

Strangely weak having previously read this author, didn t expect this one to be so poor All about telling, not showing, the story, and no compelling suspense to keep the reader s interest.
