There s nothing so good for the inside of a man as the outside of a horse The Outside of a Horse is an emotional, eye opening novel that has pushed me into some new areas of thinking I m afraid my review may grow rather controversial before I m done.Hannah s mother died of cancer five years ago, and her father returns from Iraq minus a leg and exhibiting some terrifying effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder To escape, Hannah volunteers at a nearby stable that rehabilitates abused horses Ther [...]

Full review at unleashingreaders p 2248Author interview teachmentortexts 2012 Ginny Rorby writes books about animal human relationships and the healing power of these animals This is animal fiction that falls into a completely different realm than others She breathlessly intertwines human problems with animals Her previous book, Hurt Go Happy, dealt with Joey, a deaf young girl, her mother s inability to deal with her disability, and how Sukari, a young chimpanzee, helps Joey and her mother acce [...]

I rarely connect with the main character of a story They either are annoying, unrealistic, or unstable, and after a while of reading you get sick of hearing about the damsel in distress I did not feel this way about Ginny Rorby s character Hannah Gale Ginny Rorby not only did a great job with character development of all characters, no matter how small, but she also makes the people in the book complex yet simple The Outside of a Horse develops everyone and everything that happens in the story f [...]

I m doing a book review on The Outside of a Horse by Ginny Rorby This book was recommended to my by, my sister She is a big fan of horses and books kinda like me so no wonder she liked this book. The main character is Hannah Gale, 13 years old She lives with her stepmother, this isn t one of those even stepmother books her stepmother is actually nice, also there s her baby brother Hannah s mom died from cancer five years ago and her dad is fighting in Iraq Personally I can t even imagine how hard [...]

I loved this book It has a lot of sadness in it, but hope is tightly woven throughout the book It was touching to read about the healing of Hannah s dad who lost his leg in the war and suffers from severe PTSD with the help of horses who have been through terrible abuse I also really liked the main character Hannah, who fought hard to care for her dad and the horses at the barn she volunteers at.There were a few scenes that involved rescuing mistreated horses and describing what happens to a lot [...]

I enjoyed this and I learned a lot from it Hannah s dad comes back from the Iraq war missing a leg The man turns to drink and suffers from post traumatic stress and pretty much just lays around feeling sorry for himself instead of learning to use his prosthetic and getting on with his life While her dad is turning to drink and her stepmom is running to her parent s house, Hannah turns to horses and begins volunteering at a nearby ranch for rescued horses This was very informative Issues such as [...]

This is quite possibly the worst horse book that I have ever read It started off really good, a young girl whose father returns from the war with his mind and body damaged She looks to horses to help her find stability and a sense of belonging The connection of natural horsemanship in the book was nice, and the hippo therapy for her father, both mental and physical therapy, was good But the story became totally unbelievable after her horse loses its leg and they decide to keep it alive and fit i [...]

I was expecting a sweet little horse read, but instead feel like I should start a rescue horse stable The reader learns about Canadian Premarin horse stables, where pregnant mares are cooped up and their urine is used to create human hormone replacement therapies Their colts are destroyed and the filled are impregnated to join their mothers.Add in the stats for racehorses dying and I m glad I m human. And, oh, there are characters, too Hannah s dad is back from Iraq missing part of his leg and he [...]

I m not sure what to say about this book I love horses, always have, always will And I love a good horse story Here, the author tries to tackle too many horse stories issues at once the positive aspect of equine therapies, the negative aspects of horse abuse and neglect, Premarin mares, the positive ways to develop a relationship with a horse in this case, using the Parelli Method , and the ugliness of the horse meat industry combined with the story of a man dealing with the loss of his leg and [...]

Story wise, this book was okay, and the writing was pretty good Crudeness and than a few instances of using the Lord s name in vain was very off putting to me Strong language is never necessary, in my mind The only reason it got 3 stars instead of two, was because the topic is very close to my heart rescuing abused, neglected and misused horses I very much liked that side of the story, but if you want to learn about that, you are better off reading Kim Meeder s Hope Rising Overall, a disappoin [...]

Hannah Gale loves horses Hannah s dad is a solider in the war at Iraq When he comes home she learns he has lost his leg Hannah s step mom Sondra thinks she should get a job There is a stable near her house when she asked for a job by the manager Dillon instead she volunters and connects with the horses when her father nightmares shake the household Hannah has her dad take lessons with horses can the horses teach her dad the same thing they taught her My favorite part was when Hannah got her own [...]

Such a lovely and touching book on so many levels Pretty straight forward reading, but the characters and story really get into the heart of what compassion means, in both caring for animals and our fellow humans Would recommend this book not just to people who like horses, but people who care for any animal, including humans, and never gives up hope.

The messages the author is trying to send to her Young Adult audience are valid ones, but since she has chosen horses as one vehicle to convey these messages she needs to learn about them On tiny example, female horses don t sire any progeny.

This was brought to me by one of my young patrons.

This book is an emotional, eye opening novel that has pushed me into some new areas of thinking I learned a good deal about the dark side of the horse racing industry For every champion, tens of thousands die, often before they take ten breaths The worn out, the used up, those who never measure up, all sold for slaughter And the pharmaceutical industry, particular producers of women s hormones, make their money at the dreadful expense of equine lives I am an animal lover so these points that wer [...]

I thought the ending of this was trite Though I did enjoy some parts.

I am a huge lover of horses and books so the cover immediately caught my attention What I wasn t prepared for was the amount of learning that ended up taking place in this teen fiction novel Through the use of the fictionalized characters with true stories intertwined throughout , I learned about racehorses, slaughterhouses, Premarin urine taken from pregnant horses as a postmenopausal hormone pill , Parrelli training which I would love to see and learn now , and former race winners Hannah Gale [...]

Ginny Rorby is the natural world s best friend Her earlier novel, HURT GO HAPPY, is the poignant story of a deaf child and a chimpanzee who communicate through sign language This time, Rorby turns her attention to rescued horses, and their healing effect on an adolescent girl and her war wrecked father.Young readers will be sucked right in to this moving novel Hannah Gale s mother died five years ago She lives with her harried stepmother now, while her father is half a world away in Iraq To assu [...]
