you don t need to write a novel to tell a story yrsa daley ward knows this she can tell you a story in 50 words make her point in 20 make me cry in eight bone pulls you so far deep into the ocean of yourself that you both lose and find yourself completely forget who you are and wear the skin and bones of someone else entirely for a change until you hit the four lines every once in a while that will shake you to the bone and the very heart of you then, there, it will hand you your name makes me w [...]

I don t know where I stand did I like it did I hate it both I probably would have liked it less if I wasn t having a bad day, because I think you need to be in the right mindset to actually properly enjoy this poetry collection, and I was.I didn t connect with any of the poems, but does that mean they weren t good No They were powerful, hard to read sometimes because of their topics, and even though I didn t understand sometimes who the author was talking to or talking about, I still found this [...]

Thank you to Penguin Books for providing me with this review copy I m going to start this with the caveat that I rarely read poetry In fact, this might be the first poetry book I ve ever reviewed on here But when I read a couple positive reviews and discovered that the author is Nigerian Jamaican, I was definitely intrigued.Since I m such a poetry newbie, I don t feel at all qualified to comment on the technical merits of this collection I will say that this many of the poems in this collection [...]

This book was a mixture of story telling and poetry I loved the poetry, it s brilliant However, I can t say much the same about the story telling part, it was just hard to keep up with when an event was happening and who are the people in it, but all in all it was a tragic experience and I really hope she s gonna have a better life now.Quotes Sometimes exactly what you not want to happen happens anyway But you don t know the half of it The brightest of stars, frankly, are just a load of hot air [...]

Nearly 3.5 This debut collection from a Black British Nigerian Jamaican performance poet reminded me most of Kate Tempest s work Some recurring themes are growing up in a fractured family, the highs versus occasional anguish of romantic love, and the complications of being gay in the context of conservative religion I particularly liked Coordinates Every time I travel I meet myself a little Sometimes you have to leave all your cities to fall in love , Poetry You will come away bruised but this [...]

This is by far one of the best poetry books I have ever read Yrsa Daley Ward knows how to write poetry that tears your insides apart This is my type of poetry book I would recommend this to anyone who loves poetry for its raw effect on the senses Outstanding If I could give it 10 stars out of five, no rating would do it justice Must read.

Book ReviewTitle BoneAuthor Yrsa Daley WardGenre PoetryRating Review As this is a poetry collection this review isn t going to be as long as my novel reviews For some of the poems I have read leading up to the mark in the collection, Bone is about how we see the world, how we see others, how others see us and how we love, good and bad So far my favourite poems are Bone because it looks at how women look at sex and how it can make us feel in good or bad situations but you could also see it as the [...]

3.5 5 starsbone by Yrsa Daley Ward was a very mixed read for me Some of the poems I absolutely loved and they seemed to hit me right in the heart But other poems flew straight over my head and I didn t connect to them at all In all, this was an enjoyable and thought provoking poetry collection I especially loved how this author brought a distinct story teller quality to each poem The poet didn t need a whole novel to produce an emotional story, rather she portrayed it in a variety of short and l [...]

my god, this is devastatingly emotional my heart aches and I was crying with laughter but now it s inI don t know despair, maybe awe, too confused, probably.Loving someone who hatesthemselvesis a special kind of violence.A fight inside the bones.A war within the blood.I couldn t stop myself from reading it I pressed my finger and stuffed my phone in my face because I couldn t imagine putting it down They weren t all connected, but it was a story anyway There was no end or beginning There is onl [...]

africanbookaddict 2016 05Bone is a brilliant collection of poems I preferred the long poems they read like short stories and were packed with suspense and emotion I loved how the long poems started and how the plot unfolds towards the middle of them I wasn t really crazy about how some of the poems ended though Most of the poems were on death, sex, family, relationships and Christianity She blends her West Indian Jamaican and West African Nigerian cultures beautifully in this collection, esp wit [...]

3.5 This is a collection of contemporary poetry that I definitely enjoyed than Neruda s The language and style made me be able to get it a bit and feel engaged with what Daley Ward was trying to express That being said, though I loved her writing style and felt she did not hold back in her poetry, I did not always connect to them in an emotional level, mostly because I have no experienced the things of which she wrote That is a personal thing so I still really enjoyed it and recommend it beca [...]

As a note, a physical copy of this novel was sent to me via the publisher in exchange for an honest review This does not effect my opinion in any way Thank you Yrsa Daley Ward is no stranger to expressive prose and Bone is a firm nod to this In just a few pages, readers of all ages will be compelled by her poetry and the bluntness she portrays life in small passages From hard to handle, to perfectly accurate, to some combination of the both Daley Ward is one of the most phenomenal talents to com [...]

It had some really strong and painful poems but mostly I was disappointed since I expected much because writing is a soft and a hard place, all at once.I am the tall dark strangerthose warnings prepared you for.Loving someone who hatesthemselvesis a special kind of violence.A fight inside the bones.A war within the blood. One day I will tell you what I ve been.It will scare you.If you re afraid to write it,that s a good sign.I suppose you know you re writing thetruth when you re terrified.

I really didn t like this unfortunately I found myself only liking about four poems from this whole collection I don t like the way this was written and how some poems dragged for many many pages This also has a religious component so I wanted to put that out there so some of the poems I just didn t like tough tongue to flesh, bite the lobe, swallow the juice she says will purify you like ew what no.

Sex, death, family, and mental illness are among the big themes tackled in this lovely book of poetry from a Black writer with West African and West Indian heritage, raised in England A gorgeous reminder of how much I need to actively seek diverse writers not just in fiction but in poetry as well Daley Ward s voice is gutting and true.

What I do know is that Yrsa Daley Ward is the type of poet that made me never feel worthy of calling myself a writer My feelings are deep, but would you feel it down to the bone Probably not EVERYTHING in this small book taps on the very constitution of our being Stripping away the semantics while still dancing beautifully between dream worlds, magical moments, and repulsive realities It is beautiful because it gave her poetry.

    Kirsty
Fantastic startling, rich, and admirable Daley Ward s writing is stark, vulnerable, and musing, and she balances her prose so well She also deals with some incredibly important themes, from sexuality to being taken advantage of from love to loss from parenthood to grieving Her writing is clever, and the collection comes together seamlessly it is a singular unit, made up of small stories She melds together cultures in a really interesting manner There is a brutal honesty about Daley Ward s varied [...]
