I was a shy and scrawny kid who liked weird fantasy and spooky stories Things escalated from there.

As a guy who loves crime fiction and the blues, I have found mixing the two, at least in novel form, to be disappointing, until now This is the exception, a nice gritty bit of noir with plenty of violence and a touch of a dark humor Bagely creates plenty of interesting characters and lets the reader follow them to their often violent fates as several storylines intersect It is a hell of ride, focusing mostly on a blues loving hit man, forced into one last job Mob hit man stories can often tread [...]

I just read the closing paragraph of Bitter Water Blues written by Patrick Shawn Bagley and I am already awaiting the next novel from Bagley Bitter Water Blues is proof that Bagley has a wonderful career ahead of him as a noir writer and is sure to pen noir tales that will be deemed as must reads by lovers of noir, and dare I say, all lovers of great books.Bagley has created a great cast of characters within this book They come to life as the story evolves and he really fleshes them out and allo [...]

The noir genre is noted for bad things happening to bad people, and BWB is a great example of all this There are beatings and shootings galore, as big city hoods mix with backwoods Maine rednecks Start with a retired Brooklyn hit man who now soaks in Chicago blues, and is forced to do a final job, knowing he s marked for death at the end of it On the Maine side, there s the worst small town psycho you never want to meet, and his dim, Lenny like, reluctant partner in crime Add in a tough and trou [...]

I enjoyed this book, although noir is not my favorite genre This is very well paced and drew me into the story In fact, I stayed up late to finish it because I was so caught up The characters were well drawn, the violence not overdone, there is some welcome humor, and the touches of knowledge about the blues enriched the book for me I will definitely read Bagley s next book SPOILER ALERT My only disappointment is that the protagonist won t have a series he s a nuanced and gritty character.

This was a great read, not just for an author s first novel, but as a novel overall The story was noir fiction at its best The story keeps moving as well as keeps readers interested.

I will be honest and say the only reason this book was given a 4 instead of a 5 was because of personal preference Crime noir just isn t my typical genre That being said, Bagley s colorful writing style, well developed characters, engaging plot, and hometown hick flavor blend together masterfully to create a book you can t put down Enjoyed it isn t the right phrase as at times I was grossed out, appalled, and often disgusted at the descriptions, but the story is a journey that once you start you [...]
