Cracks in the Ice By Deanna K. Klingel

This is a young adult book addressing serious issues of alcoholism, the crippling effect of family secrets, and loss of dreams It explores the world of figure skating and the mafia through the eyes of a mother and daughter There is plenty of action, but the book is mostly about relationships and what happens to a person when life deals them a bad hand The book carefully examines the steps that led up to Marian s drinking and drug use, but the cold and hostile manner in which she brought up her d [...]

Sometimes first person narratives work and sometimesey don t This is a case where I can t decide if the point of view distracted or enhanced the story The story itself, though, is rending and even compelling in many ways, and I didn t mind reading it which means the point of view thing worked itself out, but it still bears mentioning This is written for a younger YA crowd, I think or that s how it felt to me Not a bad story and a quick read if you re an adult I m guessing the teen girl in your l [...]

Cracks in the Ice is the first book I have read by Deanna Klingel, but it won t be my last A gifted storyteller, Klingel draws you into her storyline, making her characters come alive Although I do not have an interest in either the mafia or figure skating, i had a hard time putting this book down The author deals with complex issues young people may have to face in a well researched yet sensitive way An excellent read.

This young adult novel ambitiously covers about 30 years in the lives of a mother and daughter The author was best when writing in the voice of a young teenage girl The novel deals with a young figure skater who s the niece of an organized crime boss and how her life unravels as a result Excellent faith angle and treatment of addiction and recovery.

Engaged me emotionally from the beginning to the end Intriguing, powerful, and a page turner I m not a teen, but I identified with Gina s fears, her drive to win, her familial baggage When I finished, my husband picked it up and is now reading it He agrees with my assessment Highly recommend.
